PET Felt Printing: Sample Evaluation Checklist

Check PET felt samples for printing before production. Learn what to inspect in surface texture, printed patterns, face selection and high-temperature pressing.

What Should You Check When Evaluating PET Felt Samples for Printing?

A PET felt panel may look fine before printing, but the finished pattern can show details that were not obvious on the raw material. This is especially important for decorative panels, where the surface remains visible.

If you are sourcing PET felt for printing, a few checks during sampling can help you decide whether the material and surface finish are suitable for your product.

Check the Surface Before Printing

Start with the raw PET felt panel. Look at the face you plan to print and check for visible fibres, uneven texture or differences across the surface.

PET felt has a fibrous structure, so a completely uniform surface should not be assumed. The question is whether the texture is acceptable for your intended design.

Also check more than one area of the panel. A small section may look smooth, while other parts show more visible fibres.

If the printed product needs a cleaner, smoother appearance, ask whether a high-temperature pressed face is available. Pressing the surface before printing can make it smoother and reduce visible loose fibres. This may be helpful when the printed design has fine details or light colours.

Evaluate the Actual Printed Pattern

Do not approve a material for printing based only on its unprinted appearance.

Ask for a sample printed with a design similar to the one you plan to use. A plain-colour panel, a dark pattern and a light woodgrain design may show the surface differently.

For example, fine surface fibres may be less noticeable in some dark designs but more visible in a light pattern. This is not a fixed rule for every print. The actual result depends on the material, surface finish and design.

If your product will use a particular woodgrain, colour or graphic, evaluate that design on the PET felt itself. A generic print sample may not show what you need to know.

Confirm Which Face Will Be Printed

Some PET felt panels have similar front and back surfaces. Others may have a difference in texture or finish, especially when one face has been treated.

Before approving the sample, identify the face intended for printing. If necessary, mark it with a small sticker or record it in the sample details.

This simple step helps avoid confusion when the material moves between purchasing, printing and production teams.

If the panel will be printed on a high-temperature pressed face, make sure the approved sample uses that same face.

Check the Print Under Normal Viewing Conditions

A close-up photo can make surface fibres look more prominent than they appear in normal use. On the other hand, a photo may also hide small surface differences.

Check the physical sample under lighting similar to where the finished product will be used. View it from a realistic distance, as well as close up if fine details matter.

Ask yourself:
  • Does the printed pattern look clear at the intended viewing distance?
  • Are surface fibres distracting?
  • Is the appearance acceptable across the panel?
  • Does the sample meet the visual standard for the finished product?
These checks are more useful than judging the result from one photo alone.

Make Sure the Approved Sample Matches Production

Once you are satisfied with the sample, record the details that matter: panel thickness, colour, printing design, selected face and whether the surface is high-temperature pressed.

If the surface treatment or printing process changes, the appearance may also change. Make sure the production material follows the approved sample specification.

For repeat orders, keeping a reference sample can help both sides check whether the material and printed finish remain consistent.

Need PET Felt for a Printing Project?

We supply PET felt panels for decorative and functional applications, including options with a high-temperature pressed face for a smoother printing surface.

If you are developing printed PET felt panels, send us your required thickness, colour, print design or reference image, and intended application. We can discuss the suitable surface finish and help prepare a sample for your evaluation before you move to production.
