If you are planning to develop a new PET felt product, the mold is one of the first things to consider. It affects the initial investment, the shape you can produce and the time needed to move from a design drawing to production.
If you are planning 3D thermoformed PET felt panels or other shaped components, here are some practical points to discuss before starting a custom mold.
How Much Does a Custom PET Felt Mold Cost?
The cost depends mainly on the size and complexity of the design. As a general reference, a new dedicated mold usually costs can be around USD 2,000–8,000.
A relatively simple shape and a large, detailed design can require very different mold work, so it is difficult to give an accurate price without seeing the drawing.

What Material Are the Molds Made Of?
We normally use aluminum molds for thermoformed PET felt products.
Dimensional stability and durability are important because the mold goes through repeated heating cycles during production. The mold also needs to maintain the intended shape over repeated runs.
The mold design and production conditions still matter, so the right solution should be assessed against the product you want to make.
How Many Panels Can One Mold Produce?
Based on our production experience, one mold can typically produce more than 20,000 pieces before maintenance is needed.
This is a practical reference, not a fixed service-life guarantee for every design. Actual results can vary depending on the shape, mold structure and production conditions.
Mold maintenance is also worth discussing at the beginning, rather than waiting until it becomes a concern. Under our current arrangement, we cover the cost of mold maintenance or replacement, so there is no separate charge to you for these items.
This helps you assess the initial mold investment without having to budget for a separate maintenance or replacement fee under this arrangement.
How Long Does Mold Development Take?
Mold preparation usually takes around three weeks after the design is confirmed.
After the mold is ready, we produce samples for your review and approval before proceeding with mass production. The sample review stage is separate from the mold-making period, so the total project timeline will also depend on how quickly the design and samples are approved.
If your project has a target launch date, it is best to share it when requesting a quotation. This allows us to discuss the schedule from the start.
Can the Design Be Changed After the Mold Is Made?
This is an important point to settle before production.
Once the mold has been produced, its dimensions cannot simply be changed. If you later need to change the product size or shape, a new mold or a different solution may be necessary.
For this reason, please check the drawing carefully before confirming the design. Make sure the overall dimensions, depth, shape and other key requirements are correct.
If you are still comparing design options, it is better to discuss them before the mold is made.
Are There Limits to Shape, Depth or Detail?
The feasibility depends on the specific design. Not every shape can be produced exactly as drawn, and some designs may need adjustment before a mold can be made.

It is better to identify these points early than to discover a design issue after the mold has been completed.
