Custom PET Felt Colours: Pantone Matching, Samples and MOQ
One customer asked us that "Would it be possible for you to create colour matches for the following Panton colours?"
It is very common questions asked by clients who buy PET felt panels on regular basis.
When choosing PET felt for a furniture, acoustic or interior project, colour can be just as important as thickness and density.
A designer may have a specific blue or yellow in mind and ask if we can match it to a Pantone reference. This is a reasonable request, especially when the PET felt panel needs to work with other materials or follow a particular design scheme.
But matching a colour on PET felt is not always as simple as using the same Pantone code.
Why a Pantone code may not give an exact match
Our PET felt panel is made from polyester fibres. During production, the fibres are heated and melted, and the colour can change during this process, will lighter a little bit from its origin colour.
This means a Pantone reference is useful for identifying the target colour, but it does not guarantee that the finished PET felt will look exactly the same.
The difference may be small, but it matters when the material needs to match an existing product, fabric or interior finish.
For this reason, we do not recommend confirming a custom PET felt colour based on a Pantone code alone.
Start with existing colours if possible
Before developing a new colour, it is worth checking the colours already available.
For example, when a project requires a particular blue and yellow, we can first compare our existing colour options with the customer's references.
If an existing colour is close enough, it may save both time and material cost. It also avoids the minimum order requirement for a new colour.
The important step is to check the actual PET felt, not only the colour number or a picture on a screen.
A colour that looks close on a monitor may look different on the finished material. If colour is important to your project, ask for a physical sample before making the final selection.
When a custom colour is necessary
Sometimes an existing colour is not close enough. In that case, a physical sample of the required colour can be a more useful reference than a Pantone code alone.
You can send us a colour sample or a piece of the material that the PET felt needs to match. Our production engineer can use it as a reference for colour development.
This gives us a more practical basis for comparison. However, the final colour still needs to be checked on the actual PET felt, but we can adjust the colour ingredient to make the colour as much closer to required colour as possible. We recommend reviewing and approving a sample before proceeding with mass production.
If the project has a strict colour requirement, please allow time for this sample process.
What is the minimum order for a custom colour?
Custom colours require a larger order than our standard colours.
The minimum order quantities for our current PET felt specifications are:
- 12mm PET felt: 600 sheets per colour
- 24mm PET felt: 300 sheets per colour
These quantities are related to the minimum amount of coloured polyester fibre required for production. Our raw material supplier requires a minimum purchase of 4 tonnes for each custom colour.
The required number of sheets depends on the panel specification and the amount of fibre used per PET felt sheet. For this reason, the MOQ is different for 12mm and 24mm panels.
If your project only needs a small quantity, checking our existing colours first is usually the more practical option.
Check the material before placing an order
Colour is only one part of the material selection.
If you are considering 24mm PET felt, you can also request an A5 or A4 sample to check the colour, surface and thickness.
A small sample will not show every detail of a full-size panel, but it is a useful first step before deciding whether the material suits your application.
For projects with specific colour requirements, we suggest confirming three things before ordering:
- Is an existing colour close enough, or is a custom colour necessary?
- Has the colour been checked on an actual PET felt sample?
- Does the required quantity meet the custom colour MOQ?
These checks can help avoid unnecessary colour development and make the purchasing decision easier.
