PET Felt Sourcing: Why the Lowest Quote Can Be a Risk

Sourcing PET felt for a large project? Learn why balancing thickness, weight, and price is key to a stable supply chain and why the cheapest DDP quote might lead to quality and delivery issues.

Why a Successful PET Felt Project Starts with a Realistic Specification

In the PET felt industry, we often see a common situation:
a buyer has a large project and a very tight budget. They send out an inquiry for high volumes—tens of thousands of sheets—with a very specific target price, usually including DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) terms.

As a supplier, I am always happy to see large inquiries. But after years in this business, I have learned that not every inquiry leads to a healthy cooperation.

Recently, we received a request for a large monthly volume of PET felt panels. After checking the technical details and the target price, we decided not to provide a quotation.

I want to share why we made this choice, as it might help you when you are planning your next PET felt procurement.

1. The Science Behind Density and Performance

The inquiry asked for a specific thickness combined with a very low weight per square meter (GSM).

In PET felt manufacturing, density is everything. To get a certain thickness with a very low weight, the material must be "looser." If the density is too low, the panel loses its structural integrity. It becomes too soft, and more importantly, its acoustic absorption performance drops significantly.

Our production manager reviewed the request and was honest: "Our high-standard machines cannot guarantee a consistent surface and stable thickness at this low density."

For us, providing a product that might fail the client’s project later is not an option.

A low price is never a good deal if the quality is not stable.

2. The Real Cost of DDP Shipping

Many B2B buyers prefer DDP terms because it simplifies their logistics. However, a DDP price means the supplier must handle everything—sea freight, customs, duties, and local delivery.

When a target price is pushed below the market average, the "safety buffer" for logistics disappears. If ocean freight rates spike or customs clearance takes longer than expected, a supplier who quoted an unrealistic price might delay the shipment or even cancel the order to avoid losing money.

At our company, we believe in price transparency.
We want to ensure that our DDP quotes are realistic enough to guarantee that your containers arrive on time, even when the shipping market is volatile.

3. Why Professional Suppliers Walk Away

The PET felt industry is a small, specialized world. Most experienced factories and suppliers know the cost of raw materials and the limits of the machines.

When an inquiry with an "impossible" price circulates in the market, professional suppliers usually recognize it quickly.

The risk for the buyer is that only those who are willing to "cut corners" (using lower-quality recycled fibers or reducing the heating time) will accept the challenge.

Sourcing is not just about finding the lowest number; it’s about finding a partner who understands the technical reality of the product.

4. Our Commitment: Honest Communication

Our philosophy is simple:
We only serve clients who value quality and long-term stability.

We prefer to say "No" at the beginning if we know a specification is technically risky, rather than saying "Yes" and delivering a problematic product later.

This is how we protect our reputation and, more importantly, how we protect our clients' projects.

A good supply relationship should be a "Win-Win."
The buyer gets a stable, high-performance product, and the supplier has enough margin to maintain good service and production standards.

Final Thoughts for Buyers

If you are currently sourcing PET felt for a large-scale project, I suggest looking beyond the unit price. Ask your supplier:
  • "Is this weight/thickness ratio standard for your equipment?"
  • "How do you ensure density consistency across different batches?"
  • "What is your plan if logistics costs change suddenly?"

A supplier who can answer these questions honestly is a supplier who will help your business grow.
