What Should Buyers Prepare Before Printing on PET Felt Panels?
Printing on PET felt panels can be used for interior decoration, office branding, wall panels and other custom projects.
Before sending a design for printing, it is worth checking a few details. A file that looks fine on a computer screen may not give the expected result when printed on felt. Panel size, base colour, surface texture and the printing method can all affect the final appearance.
Here is what to prepare before requesting a printed sample or production quote.
Prepare the Artwork
Start with the original artwork file, preferably in a format suitable for printing.
If you have a vector file, such as AI, EPS or a print-ready PDF, provide it where possible. For photographs or other raster images, send the original high-resolution file rather than a screenshot copied from a website or presentation.
If the artwork contains text, logos or fine details, make sure they are clear at the intended print size.
If you are not sure whether the file is suitable, send it for review before arranging the sample.
Confirm the Colour Reference
A colour shown on a monitor may look different when printed on PET felt.
If you have a specific colour requirement, provide a physical reference or a recognised colour reference where possible. Pantone references can be useful when communicating the intended colour, but they should not be treated as a guarantee of an exact match on felt.
The material's surface and the printing process can affect how a colour appears. If colour accuracy is critical to your project, approve a printed sample before proceeding with the full quantity.
Check the Image Resolution
For photographs and other pixel-based images, resolution matters.
An image that looks sharp when viewed small may become blurry or show visible pixels when enlarged across a large panel.
Send the image at its original size and tell the printing team the intended print dimensions. This makes it easier to judge whether the file has enough detail for the job.
Avoid enlarging a small image just to make it fit the panel. Increasing the file dimensions does not restore detail that was never there.
State the Panel Size and Print Area
The overall panel size and the printed area are not always the same.
For example, you may need a design printed across the full panel, or only a logo or image in one corner. State the panel dimensions and mark the exact area where the artwork should appear.
If the panel will be cut or installed into a frame afterwards, explain that too. The position of the design may need to account for the finished dimensions and any parts that will be covered during installation.
A drawing with the print area clearly marked is often more useful than a written description alone.
Allow for Bleed Where Needed
If the design extends to the edge of the panel, ask whether bleed is required.
Bleed means extending the artwork beyond the intended trim line so that small cutting or alignment differences do not leave an unwanted unprinted edge.
The amount of bleed depends on the printing and finishing process, so do not guess a standard value. Confirm the required file setup before preparing the final artwork.
If the design has a white border or must stop at a specific position, make that clear as well.
Choose the Right PET Felt Base Colour
The base colour of the PET felt can make a real difference to the printed result. For many designs, we recommend white PET felt because it helps printed colours appear bright and clear.
However, the best choice depends on the artwork.
For example, we once worked on an order for movie posters that would be displayed along a cinema corridor. The customer initially wanted black PET felt as the base because a dark background suited the setting.
After reviewing the artwork, we advised against using black. The posters contained many dark colours, so printing them on black felt could make some parts of the images difficult to see. The customer agreed to use white PET felt instead, and the finished panels had bright, vivid colours.
Woodgrain designs can call for a different approach. In such cases, we may select a felt colour close to the intended wood tone, such as light brown, dark brown or camel, depending on the design.
The key is to consider both the artwork and the base material before production. The colour that suits the installation environment is not necessarily the colour that will give the best printing result.
Confirm the Base Colour and Other Details Before Production
Even when the artwork and material have been discussed, assumptions can still lead to mistakes.
For the movie-poster order mentioned above, our production team would normally have used white PET felt as the printing base. However, the customer had expected black felt. If we had not reviewed the details again before production, both sides could have proceeded with different expectations.
This is why we reconfirm the key details before starting an order. The artwork, base colour, panel dimensions and print area should all be clear to both the customer and the production team.
If you have a particular expectation about the material or the finished appearance, state it explicitly rather than assuming it is understood.
A short confirmation before production is much easier than resolving a mismatch after the panels have been printed.
Before You Request a Printed Sample
Before sending your enquiry, prepare as much of the following as you can:
- Colour reference or Pantone number, if available
- Image resolution and intended print size
- Bleed requirements, if applicable
- Preferred PET felt base colour
- Expected surface appearance
You do not need to have every technical detail settled before making an enquiry. If you have the artwork, panel size and a clear idea of the finished result, that is a good starting point.
If you are planning a printed PET felt project, send us your artwork, panel dimensions and intended application. We can review the details with you and discuss what needs to be confirmed before a printed sample is made.
