PET Felt Color Matching: What Buyers Should Know

Can PET Felt Have Color Differences Between Batches?

If you are buying colored PET felt panels for a large project, you may have an important question:
If I order the same color again, will it look exactly the same?

The honest answer is: not necessarily 100%.

But this does not mean PET felt has a serious color quality problem.

Batch-to-batch color variation is a normal challenge for many colored materials, including fabrics, leather, PVC flooring and other products made in production batches.

The important thing is not to promise that color will never change.

The important thing is to understand why color differences happen and how a supplier controls them.

For buyers, this is often a better way to evaluate a PET felt supplier.

Why Can the Same PET Felt Color Look Slightly Different?

Colored PET felt is made from polyester fibers, and its final appearance depends on the raw materials and production process.

When the same color is produced again in another batch, a slight visual difference can sometimes occur.

This is especially relevant when the time between two orders is long.

For example, imagine a customer purchased dark grey PET felt panels in 2023 and comes back in 2026 for another project.

The customer may ask:
“Can you make exactly the same color as our previous order?”
We can use the previous color information as a reference.

But it would not be responsible to promise that a new production batch will look 100% identical to material produced three years ago.

The raw material batch is different.

The production batch is different.

And the production conditions may also be different.

This is simply part of manufacturing colored materials.

This Is Not Only a PET Felt Issue

The same situation exists in many industries.

Think about:
  • PVC flooring
  • Upholstery fabrics
  • Leather
  • Wall coverings
  • Textiles
  • Other colored interior materials

In many of these products, buyers do not simply approve a color name and expect every future production to be visually identical forever.

There is normally a process of:
Sampling → comparison → approval → mass production

And sometimes there are several rounds of sampling before the final color is approved.

Even then, the approved sample and mass production may have a small visual difference.

The real question is:
Is the difference within the customer's acceptable range?

This is also how we should look at PET felt color consistency.

Color Matching Starts Before Mass Production

For a new PET felt project, we recommend confirming the color before mass production.

A color name or code is useful, but a physical sample is much more reliable when color is important.

The customer can compare the sample under the actual lighting conditions of the project and confirm whether the color is acceptable.

This is particularly important for:
  • Large acoustic feature walls
  • Office interiors
  • Retail spaces
  • Acoustic ceilings
  • Furniture components
  • Large commercial projects

A small difference may not be obvious when looking at one panel.

But when hundreds of panels are installed together on a large wall, even a small variation can become more noticeable.

That is why color approval should happen before mass production, not after installation.

How Can a PET Felt Supplier Reduce Color Variation?

This is where supplier experience matters.

Color variation cannot always be eliminated completely.

But the risk can be controlled.

One of the most important factors is raw material sourcing.

For our PET felt panels, we work with a top-tier raw material supplier and normally purchase raw materials in large quantities.

Why does this help?

When the same color is produced several times within a relatively close period, we can use material from the same raw material batch across several production runs.

This gives us better control over color consistency.
It does not mean we claim:
“Our PET felt will never have any color difference.”

Instead, it means we are reducing the number of variables that can cause unnecessary variation.

This is a much more realistic approach to color control.

Why Large Raw Material Purchases Can Make a Difference

Raw material purchasing may not be the first thing a buyer thinks about when comparing PET felt suppliers.

But it can have a direct impact on production consistency.

Imagine two suppliers receiving the same repeat order.

Supplier A purchases small quantities of raw material whenever an order arrives.

Supplier B purchases a larger quantity and uses the same raw material batch for several recent production runs.

The second supplier has more control over the material going into those production batches.

This does not guarantee zero color variation.

But it can reduce the possibility of obvious differences between batches.

For large or repeat projects, this is one of the reasons we do not look at raw material price alone.

Stable raw material sourcing is also part of quality control.

What If the Customer Orders Again After Two or Three Years?

This is probably the most important situation to discuss.

If a customer places a repeat order several years later, we recommend comparing a new sample with the original approved sample.

Do not rely only on:
  • The old color name
  • The old color code
  • A photograph
  • A previous purchase order

If the new panels will be installed next to the old panels, physical comparison becomes even more important.

The customer can then decide whether the new color is acceptable for the application before mass production starts.

This simple step can prevent a much bigger problem later.

What Should Buyers Ask Their PET Felt Supplier?

If color consistency is important to your project, I recommend asking a few practical questions before ordering.

1. How do you control color between production batches?

A professional supplier should be able to explain the actual process rather than simply saying “our colors are stable.”

2. Where do you source your raw materials?

The stability of the raw material supply is an important part of consistent production.

3. Can you keep several recent production batches based on the same raw material batch?

This can help reduce unnecessary variation between nearby orders.

4. Can you provide a physical sample before mass production?

For appearance-sensitive projects, this is a simple but important step.

5. What happens if we reorder the same color after several years?

A responsible supplier should recommend checking a new sample rather than promising that the new batch will be exactly identical.

These questions can tell you much more about a supplier's production control than simply asking:
“Can you guarantee the color?”

What We Do to Control PET Felt Color Consistency

For our PET felt production, we focus on several areas:
  • Stable raw material sourcing
  • Long-term cooperation with a top-tier raw material supplier
  • Large-volume raw material purchasing
  • Production batch control
  • Sample comparison before mass production when required
  • Keeping approved color references
  • Clear communication with customers about repeat orders

We have customers who have been working with us for several years.

For these long-term customers, we pay particular attention when the same colors are produced repeatedly.

So far, we have not received feedback from these customers about obvious color differences in our PET felt panels.

Of course, this does not mean color variation is impossible.

It means that good production control can make the result much more stable and predictable.

Can We Guarantee 100% Identical Color?

No responsible manufacturer should casually promise that colored PET felt will be exactly identical between every production batch, especially when orders are separated by several years.

Instead, we believe in controlling what can actually be controlled:
Raw material → Production batch → Sample → Approval → Mass production

This is a more realistic approach.

And it is also how we prefer to communicate with customers.

If a customer needs the same PET felt color again after a long period, we would rather send a new sample for comparison than simply say:
“Don't worry. It will be exactly the same.”
Because in manufacturing, a realistic promise is more useful than a perfect-sounding one.

Need Consistent PET Felt Colors for Your Project?

If you are sourcing colored PET felt panels for a large project or planning repeat orders, we can discuss the color requirements before production.

You can send us:
  • Your required color or color reference
  • Panel size and thickness
  • Estimated quantity
  • Whether it is a new project or repeat order
  • Whether the new panels will be installed next to existing panels

We can then recommend the appropriate sampling and production approach.

If color consistency is important for your PET felt project, contact us before production. It is much easier to control color before the panels are made than after they are installed.
