A PET felt buyer may see a big price difference between suppliers. Before choosing the lower price, check thickness, GSM, sheet structure, custom size and processing requirements.
Why PET Felt Prices Can Be So Different for the Same Specification
A customer once told us that our PET felt price was not competitive.
It was not the first time we heard this.
For buyers, comparing suppliers by price is normal. If two suppliers offer 12mm PET felt in the same colour and size, it is reasonable to ask why one price is higher than the other.
But in this case, the required sheet size was quite unusual.
The customer needed a large custom sheet for its own production. The material would not be sold as a standard acoustic panel. It would be processed into finished office products.
This made us look at the quotation again.
Not because we wanted to argue about the price.
But because we wanted to ask a more basic question:
Are we actually comparing the same PET felt?
The Same Thickness Does Not Always Mean the Same Material
For PET felt, thickness is only one part of the specification.
For example, two suppliers may both offer:
12mm PET felt
But the GSM can be different.
One may be 1,800gsm. Another may be 2,000gsm. Another may be 2,400gsm.
The material weight, firmness and processing characteristics can therefore be different, even though both products are called “12mm PET felt”.
But there is another point that is easier to miss.
The Same GSM Does Not Always Tell the Whole Story
Even if two sheets have the same:
- thickness
- GSM
- sheet size
- colour
the actual material structure can still be different.
This is especially important when PET felt is purchased as a raw material and then processed by the buyer.
For example, if the sheet will be CNC cut into desk screens, partitions or furniture components, the structure through the full thickness becomes important.
A sheet may look fine from the surface, but the internal structure can affect how it behaves during cutting and further processing.
For our production, we pay attention to making the PET felt as an integrated structure through the thickness. The material is not designed as separate layers that can easily split from the middle.
This is one of the details that may not appear on a normal quotation.
Custom Size Also Changes the Comparison
The customer in this case required a very specific large sheet size.
A size like this is not something we would normally keep as regular stock.
It needs to be produced according to the customer's requirement.
Custom production can affect:
- production efficiency
- material utilization
- minimum order quantity
- loading efficiency
- production scheduling
There is also another practical issue.
A large sheet can look attractive because it gives the buyer the exact cutting area needed for its finished products. But it can also create more unused space during container loading compared with standard sheet sizes.
So the sheet price is only one part of the calculation.
Look at the Finished Product, Not Only the Sheet Price
This is particularly important for manufacturers.
If you buy PET felt only to resell it, the sheet price may be your main concern.
But if you buy the material and process it yourself, the calculation can be different.
You may also need to consider:
How many finished pieces can I make from one sheet?
How much material is wasted during cutting?
Is the sheet stable during CNC processing?
Will the material quality remain consistent from order to order?
A lower sheet price does not automatically mean a lower material cost for the finished product.
This is why we prefer to understand how the PET felt will be used before recommending a specification.
Before Comparing Two PET Felt Prices
If you receive two very different quotations, it may be useful to check more than the price.
At minimum, compare:
- Thickness
- GSM
- Sheet size
- Colour
- Material structure
- Custom or stock production
- Processing requirements
- Quantity
If all of these are the same, then you have a much better basis for comparing the prices.
If some are different, the two quotations may simply be for different materials.
We are not saying a higher-priced PET felt is always better.
It is not.
A lower GSM may be completely suitable for one application and unnecessary for another. The right material depends on what you are going to make with it.
The important thing is to know what you are comparing before deciding which price is lower.
